THE EDGES OF MY MIND
You occupy the edges of my mind
waiting to be summoned into thoughts,
filling me with longing and with guilt
for all those opportunities ignored.
But life stands on my doorstep every day,
demanding, using, eating up the hours,
and years drift into decades, separating.
We lose the bonds that once held us so close.
Oh I would like to stretch my arms out wide
and gather you all to me in this place,
to look upon each face in turn and say
how I have missed you all along the way.
Yet every day I summon one or other
and slowly pleasure in that time we had,
knowing that we cannot be together,
it’s gone and we have changed, there’s no return.
And do you think of me sometimes I wonder,
do I occupy the edges of your mind?
